Saturday Sunshine And Shopping!!!

Phew...it's very sunny out there and it's also very warm. I really didn't need my coat on this morning when I went to do the dreaded 'with husband' shopping.
DD is at work until 3pm and I didn't want to wait until that time so I just had to put my big girl knickers on and ask Andy to take me.
I now need a lie down in a dark room for a week at least to get over it....lol.

As we have Ruby for the weekend next weekend we thought it might be a good idea to make a start on the purchase of a rabbit and a guinea pig for her so with that in mind we popped into Pets At Home to buy some little books on the subject and to book her onto one of their Little Furries workshops which will give her a chance to handle the animals and learn about caring for them.

I got three of the Beatrice aprons cut out yesterday and actually got one of them sewn up and finished.
They were cut out in the large size and I am going to have to go back in with the scissors and reduce them down to a medium as the finished one is very big on me. It can stay as it is as it is just going to be an apron and I really do not fancy unpicking the metres and metres of binding to reduce the size of it.
It was great to make though and I learned a lot from it....I can now do an overlaid seam which I have never done before and I learned that next time I will use either a bought binding or I will make my own out of much lighter fabric. The one I made this time was a little difficult to work with being the same weight as the apron fabric. I did it and it looks nice but I'll make it a bit easier on myself next time.
So the other two will get recut and sewn but I will have to wait until I can pop to Derby for some binding or I may wait until DD is on holiday at the end of the month when we are going to visit The Rag Market in Birmingham....I may be able to get some from there.

Not much of anything going on this weekend just a lazy one for Andy and myself. DD is at work for a couple of hours today and tomorrow so she still has time to do a bit of lazying too.
They had a good offer on Pizza Express pizzas in T***o this morning so I have picked up a couple to have with a jacket potato and some coleslaw tonight. Tomorrow will be a full on roast beef dinner.

For now I am off to do some superglueing of metal discs which I am using to make into pattern weights. They will be sewn inside some lovely colourful felt circles and blanket stitched.
I have found using weights instead of pins on my patterns a complete revelation. No more pins for me when I am cutting out.

Well I hope you all have this lovely sunshine and that the weekend is great for you.

  1. My first husband and I could not shop together. We would end up in some kind of argument every single time. My second husband and I are a better team when it comes to shopping, thankfully. Have a beautiful weekend, Sheila!! xo

    1. We don't argue as such Wendy...he just drives me nuts filling my trolley with all kinds of stuff that isn't in my meal plan and my shopping ends up costing double what I wanted to spend.
Luckily I don't go shopping with him too often else I might be in jail by now...lol.
Hope your weekend is sunny and that you can get out and about taking more of your fabulous photos-x-

    1. Exactly Jackie. He thinks shopping consists of entirely treats. I don't know where he thinks the meals come from.
I am just about to start on sewing up the weights so I will post again later today and show you....they are going to be so cute.

  3. I hate shopping on the weekend. So many people! I'm glad to have my car back so I can go in the week. The aprons sound lovely. Do we get to see a photo?

    1. Oh don't get me started on weekend shopping. I usually don't go on a Saturday.....and excuse me but when did so many men start doing the supermarket shop? Clogging up the aisles while they stand chatting about football and lord knows what else. One nearly got a pack of yoghurts inserted into a very dark place yesterday I can tell you....lol.
I will post a photo of me modelling one of the aprons when I have made one of the smaller ones. The one I have made which is way too big makes me look like I have been inserted into a very large carrier bag to be put out with the rubbish....lol-x-

  4. I bought ( well the HG bought me ) some heavy weight washers offthe tinterwebs for me after seeing them used on the sewing bee. Genius idea because as careful as I try it's hard not to move the pattern around when you are pinning! I'm not covering mine though! At the minute they are still in the little jiffy back they came in. I might make a little fabric basket to store them in.

    1. Hey Rachel
I picked mine up from Screwfix and Andy got me some from work but I find I can't pick them up very well when my fingers are acting up....hence glueing them into a little stack which is much easier.

    2. Mine are about 1.5cm deep - v heavy - I really don't want to drop one on my toes!! However seeing how pretty you made yours - I might have to get some feltcand cover mine - and actually you using felt is very clever as they are less likely to slip about xx

    3. Ooooh no....don't go dropping them on your toes...that would be very ouch indeed.
I am hoping they won't slip about....I'll let you know.

  5. The Rag Market isn't like it used to be Sheila - probably only half a dozen fabric stalls now. There is one guy who does patchwork cotton weight fabric (which would be good for binding) for £2.00 per metre - it's where I go to get fabric for bag linings - it washes ok and doesn't shrink and he has a lot of pretty ditsy type fabric - he also does the white on white which I use for applique backing. Whatever you do - don't go into the meat and fish market - it's not like it used to be - all I can say is that the smell in there is enough to turn your stomach - it's not how it used to be back in the 60's and 70's - it used to be a brilliant market then Xx

    1. Oh Trudie thanks for that.
It's over twenty years since the last time I went there. We lived in town then and we were just around the corner from the train station so I could just hop on a train and go.
Is there a stall that does trimmings and ribbons there now?
I will steer clear of the meat and fish for definite.
      Thanks again-x-

    2. Hiya Sheila
Yes there was a few haberdashery stalls in there - that part now is a lot smaller than it used to be - there were half a dozen haberdashery stalls so you may get all that you want - I can remember going in the fish market with my Grandad in the 60's when it was next to the bus station and it always smelt clean then now it smells awful and I couldn't recognise any of the fish they were selling! Your pattern weights have turned out brilliant well done -sorry I'm late replying - just got back from seeing Pasha from Strictly at the Grand in Wolverhampton - he was really good - hope you have a good day shopping xxx

    3. That's great Trudie...I could do with stocking up on a few things.
We used to go to the fish market in Derby with my Grandad. It used to give me nightmares but my favourite bit was the fenced off area in the corner where they sold kittens and puppies.
Can't wait to use the pattern weights.
Wolverhampton....goodness me it's a long, long time since I went there. My Dad came from Wolverhampton and I think I was about three the last time I went.
      Have a lovely day-x-
