A Mrs Tea Towel Christmas Eve Tradition!!!

More than twenty years ago I started the tradition of us having a home cooked ham on Christmas Eve. We have it with salad and chips and we all look forward to it immensely.
Over the years I have done everything from mustard to marmalade hams but this year we are having a change and today I will be making this.........

Mine won't have cost me £1.58 a portion though as it was bought with my T***o vouchers.
The recipe is in the little Christmas book from A**a.

It is wickedly cold here this morning with a spiteful wind blowing. The sky is a horrible sickly grey so I don't know what that is going to throw at us I'm sure.....hoping for a little snow but it will more than likely be rain.

Andy has been into the little town early this morning to fetch his pork pie. He has to have one from Birds and if you don't get there early you don't get one. He says it was really busy in town so I am very glad that I will not be going in again now until after Christmas.

I have a good mixture of jobs to be getting on with while the ham is cooking......finishing off the laundry, clearing all my sewing stuff out of the dining room as the cabinets will have to be wheeled out into the kitchen to make room for seven of us around the table on Christmas Day and there is a small basket of ironing to get done out of the way.
The Christmas music will be going on.....for as long as I can stand it and I may see if I can persuade Andy to light the fire.

Hope you all have a cosy Christmas Friday.

    1. I've not tried cooking mine in Coca Cola yet. My son does his pulled pork in cola and it is very nice-x-

  2. I cook my Christmas ham differently every year, last year it was ginger this year is smoky maple syrup. I often do the Coca Cola version as I haven't met anyone yet who doesn't love it.

  4. We're having a ham for our Xmas lunch - neither of us is particularly fond of turkey, so we'd rather have something we both really like. I'm following Mary Berry's recipe for cooking it in a mixture of cider and orange juice, then leaving to cool and glazing with marmalade for the final half hour in the oven (although Queen Mary uses mango chutney on hers).

    1. I have to be honest Sooze and say that turkey really isn't my most favourite either and I am wishing that I had ordered a cockerel.
The cider and orange juice ham sounds so nice. These ham ideas will have me spoilt for choice next time I do one-x-

  5. We always have ham with chips and salad for Boxing Day tea. Anything else just wouldn't be right. I've been catching up with what you've been up to and did a sharp gasp when I read about the fire. Thank goodness it wasn't worse. The cookies and peppermint creams look lovely. We always made P creams when we were little and would dip one half in chocolate.

It's Wet, windy and cold here as well. Lighting the fire sounds a very good idea. xx

    1. Our new tradition for Boxing day which I started last year is cold turkey, ham, cheeses, pickles and a bowl of salad with crusty bread. Only because I just can't eat two huge roast meals one after the other.

The fire was pretty scary and I thank the heavens that I was standing to the side instead of straight in front as I usually do. The outcome would have been very different. As it is the left side of my hair is now shorter than my right and my left eyebrow is a bit singed so not too much damage.

I had forgotten ust how sickly peppermint creams are but Ruby likes them.

Fire is lit but my feet and hands haven't thawed out yet-x-

  6. I need to get aboard this ham and chips festive tradition, sounds like a good one to me! Yum.

yey, you got your comments changed to the way you wanted!

I'd planned to do my festive veg prep this afternoon, but things have changed. Violet is being sick, so the thought of sprouty scent wafting through the house isn't the best of ideas. Though other than that, she seems quite ok, so fingers crossed she'll be back to normal tomorrow. We've all got sniffles and whatnot, sigh, just in time for Christmas. :o(

Glad not to be in town or in any supermarkets today, I can't be doing with manic people getting in my way when I'm shopping!

    1. Sadie...it's a great tradition as I would be cooking a ham anyway and there are always leftovers so why not use those leftovers before and have a delicious meal.

I meant to say a huge thank you in the comment I left on your post today. You were right I was set up wrong and I am thrilled to now be able to reply to comments individually.

Poor, poor Violet. I hope you all get well enough to enjoy some of the holiday.
      Hugs-x-

    1. My daughter in law likes to have ham when we go to a carvery for Sunday lunch but the thought of eating it with veg and gravy sends me a bit wibbly. So it's always with salad for me.
Mine is now out of the oven after being glazed with the blackcurrant and rum. It is really, really nice.
Good luck with your dinner and have a lovely Christmas-x-

  9. I try to do a ham every Xmas Eve but I just can't get it right. It never carves very well and ends up in chunks or the other extreme - stringy like pulled ham! So I'm afraid this year I've cheated and bought a ready roasted piece and it's even ready sliced! How lazy is that!! The £20 cost to me will be worth it I hope.
